Blended Coexistence

Once home to one of Denmark’s largest shipyards, Refshaleøen now thrives as a vibrant landscape of informal uses, hosting street food markets, festivals, artist studios, and event spaces. This project reimagines Refshaleøen not as a blank slate for top-down redevelopment, but as a dynamic, living archive shaped by cultural memory, industrial heritage, and informal occupation. Through a phased strategy of densification, reuse, and infill, the masterplan enhances four core zones: ecological, production, commercial, and arts & culture, encouraging blurred boundaries. Through a self-sufficient and dynamic urban ecosystem that resists erasure, alternative futures are prototyped through layered use, adaptive reoccupation, and reciprocal relationships between people, place, and resources.
